Guide to Vienna Schwechat Airport (VIE / LOWW)

Updated Saturday 17th October, 2009

Vienna has 2 runways 16/34 & 11/29 in a T configaration. The traffic is a nice mix of European and Eastern carriers but only Air Transat from North America. Far East Cargo flights are numerous and there is considerable Bizjet traffic. The airport changed it's approach and departure patterns about 10 times during the 2 days I was there, making it rather a frustrating airport to spot at. It was also suggested by the locals to carry ID at all time and be careful where you park you car. The terminal is to the north of the east-west runway and was not visited. Interesting A/c seen while there was an Qatar A320, EVA A330 and a Dniporavia EMR 145. A bicycle would be a massive asset.

Photo Spot Spot A - The Cemetery

Situated at the S/E corner of the airport. at the village of Klein-Neusiedl there is a small cemetery with a small carpark. From here walk round the tree line and up the dirt road to a suitable point to spot. A small set of steps would be advantageous.

Photo Spot Spot B - The Cross

Where the two runways intersect there is a crash gate and a small picnic area and the path mentioned in spot 1 continues to here. Do Not drive up the road from Klein-Neusiedl.

Photo Spot Spot C - South Of East West Runway

To get here, it is a long walk and you must leave your car parked safely near the B10 road. From here aircraft departing westerly can be seen and has a limited view of the ramp. However the east bound traffic tend to depart to the north. Arrivals from the west can be photoed by moving back towards the B10 and departures moving to the east.
