The Island of Zakynthos is located in the Ionian Sea and is the most southerly of the Ionian island group. The Airport at Zakynthos is typically greek and is located in the provence of Laganas - 6km from the capital Zakynthos Town. Its very small and can get very busy in the high season with many british charters such as Thomsonfly, First Choice, Monarch and My Travel operating on a daily basis at the airport. Olympic also operate a daily flight service to Athens in the summer and other airlines such as Scandanavian Airlines, Air Berlin, Transavia and LTU operate throughout the week.

All roads on the island lead to Zakynthos Town so from Zakynthos Town take the road towards the Keri Peninsular and follow this road until you see a sign saying 'Aerodromio (Airport) 0.5.' Turn left here and it will lead you directly to the terminals. Taxis also run to the airport from many of the resorts.

There are 2 terminals at the airport a tiny dated departure terminal and a clean modern arrivals terminal at Zakynthos. Departures Terminal - Toilets, Cafe, Duty Free, Smoking Area Arrivals Terminal - Toilets.

Departures - This is a small and dated terminal that needs extending. Once disembarking your coach you will be told to que outside the terminal before entering as there are 6 check in desks. After youve checked in turn right and theres the toilets and walk along a small corridor to get to the security area. When youve passed through enter the departure lounge where you see the 2 gates. The toilets are to your right and the Cafe, Duty Free and smoking area are to your left Arrivals - This is a clean modern terminal and only the downstairs is complete! Once youve entered the terminal walk through passport control into the baggage claim area. There are 2 carousels and the toilets to your left. Once youve collected your luggage go through E.U arrivals to your coach/taxi/hire car.

Kalamaki Beach - Located at the south side of the island kalamaki beach is probably the best place to spot/take photos of planes. It is the best place to sunbathe and watch planes land on the 34 approach. This is a magnificent area in which to spot.

I holidayed here and planes fly incrediby low over the hotel when making a 16 Landing and 34 takeoff. Planes go so low over the hotel you can see the pilot in the cockpit!

At the southern end of the runway is a concrete hut with a small concrete slab on the ground this is a great place to watch landings and take offs. As all aircraft back track they pass you and then turn 180. Beware of using airband radio anywhere in Greece. The police don't understand plane spotting particularly radios. Zante airport is not too strict due to it being a commercial field only.
