Guide to Rome Fiumicino Airport

It is placed on the roof of the bar of the IP-API gas station along "via Coccia di Morto". With an higher point of view, you can watch about 70% of Fiumicino moviments. It stand just in front of RWY16R, where you can spot all the landed airplanes while rolling out just straight in front of you. You have also a very nice overview of RWY 25, from wich you may see rotating planes taking off. You have the best light after 2 p.m. during winter time, and after 4 p.m. during summertime; take care of heat haze coming from the runway during hot days. Rotating planes from rwy25 have the best light after 6p.m. in summertime, since the rwy path is almost pointing west.
In the days with strong southern or northern winds, you have also a wide view of RWY 16R/34L movements.

You can easily recognize this spotting point because is along Via Coccia di Morto close a little bridge that connects a safety gate of the airport to the road. Putting the lens among the grid of the gate you can shot in the morning aircrafts departing from RWY 25 or 16R, in the afternoon departing from RWY 34L or landing for 16R. Sometimes, in this point, you can have problem with airport's security, in particular (100% surely) when an EL AL aircraft is landing or departing.

This point is situated at Tamoil gas station along Via Coccia di Morto. From here you have a wide view on RWY16R/34L movements. Ideal for RWY34L landings, when you can get a clear side shot of landing planes, or RWY16R takeoff, when you can get some nice shots of climbing planes.

You have an excellent view on planes landing on RWY34L (used only with northen wind condition), and you have best light in the morning, until 10 a.m. winter time or 12 a.m. during summer time.

It's located at the end of Via del Porto in front of a security gate of the airport. From this position you can shot departing planes from 25. Most of light/medium plane rotate at this exact position, but you need to be very quick to get the picture. You may also have a view on planes taxing to reach the holding position for RWY 25. Only in the afternoon.

It's located at the end of Via dei Collettori in front of a security gate of the airport. It's a corner of airport perimeter where you can whatch RWY 25 holding point in front of you and RWY 16L and 16C on your left. Best light to snap holding position scenes is from 3 p.m. in the winter or 6 p.m. during summer time. Front view are always backlight (pointing south with the camera) so you have to wait until the airplanes enter the runway and make a 90%uFFFD turn. Sometimes you can have problems with airport's security, in particular (100% surely) when an EL AL aircraft is landing or departing.

Along Viale della Trigolana (on the western side of RWY 16L) there is a small dirty road that bring you to a safety gate of the airport. On the right there is a private cultivated field (be careful if plants are growing) that permit you to photograph aircrafts landing on 16L in a 3/4 right-frontal visual. Inside the field you can move to change visual and spot planes in a lateral or a 3/4 right-back view. This spotting point is good in the P.M. hours of the day.
