Birmingham is like many of the UK's regionals home to the odd based charter, a couple of regional carriers and of course a low cost carrier. BA have now ceased operations from Birmingham with the take over of BA connect by Flybe. Flybe though do offer flights to a number of destinations using Dash 8 Q400's and an ERJ-195 based at the airport.

Birmingham is perhaps best though for the few Asian carriers it receives. Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and PIA are visitors along with Air India, other long haul routes operated by Emirates, Continental and Air Transat.

Photography at BHX perhaps isn't as good as it used to be. The area behind the Tristar Hotel used to be the prime location, it being a crash gate area meant you could park there for free as well. However this was closed off early in 2003 and is no longer accessible, meaning BHX has only 1 photo spot that I know of.

Photo Spot Spot A - Long Stay Car Park, Western End

The car park has recently been extended and now stretches further out towards the taxiway and is also now very close to the approach path. When runway 33 is in use the area is good for getting shots as aircraft approach you taxiing out, some good head on shots or before they line up for take-off for those 90° side on shots. You can get shots as the aircraft arrive, approach shots in the morning and shots from behind as they touchdown.
When 15 is in use you can get similar shots as they taxi off of the runway or head on shots as they depart.
There is a small fence next to the area that can be worked around but I would recommend a set of small steps.

Photo Spot Spot B - Sheldon Country Park

The Park is at the end of Runway 15 and is accessable from the A45 Coventry Rd or the Village of Marston Green, Park near the Train Station.

Good views of landing aircraft on Runway 15 with 75mm lense, head on Views and Taxing Aircraft with 200mm

Take off on Runway 33 some distace off and longer lenses needed for decent photos

I now have a plane mad daughter, we have managed to park in car park 5 and seen a few planes take off and land, she wants to see the big international planes take off and land is there anywhere we can see that?
It's a shame the airport doesn't have a viewing room within the airport to see all if this or is There?
We have been in Sheldon park at the end of the runway but it only seems to be flybe and Ryan air planes
Can someone help?

I went to BHX on Tuesday to get some pictures. I parked just off Catherine-de-Barnes Lane on the road to Bickenhill (no red/yellow lines here), then walked to Clock Lane where there's a footpath which takes you right next to the A45. Unfortunately, the path and runway extension has been built in such a way that you cannot get a good shot of the runway or taxiing aircraft from this position. By the time I'd got there, it was too late to go anywhere else and the sun was setting, so I headed back to my car.

Be warned that Clock Lane off Catherine de Barnes Lane has Double Yellow /Red Lines and the little men from the Council on their scooters like issuing tickets. Shame.

The village of Bickenhill just to the south of BHX, now has double yellow and double red lines all the way through the village making it impossible to park and walk to the area near the A45.
It would appear that Solihull Council have been out with the red paint, as virtually every road in the area is now adorned with new parking restriction lines.

Having recently visited BHX on 21-22/03/15, I discovered two separate sites (as perhaps possibly already mentioned).

The first was by parking on Hazeldine Road (off the Radleys) near to the small mini-roundabout and parking up. From there, there's a gated area that gives access onto the Sheldon Country Park. As you walk through to the clearing, you can see some park benches off to your left - this location gives you a view from the Runway '15' end (on this particular weekend, of the Departures).

However, the best spot I found was by driving along Catherine-de-Barnes Lane, and turning onto Clock Lane. Just near to the entrance of the lane on the left, is a gated area for pedestrian access that leads onto a hill next to the A45 & gives a gr

if you want another place to see planes at Birmingham airport, head towards Catherine de Barnes lane and park up in clock lane or another side street, follow the public footpath round to the airport and you find yourself under the yellow landing lights, great views of take off and landings

Is the cargo area restricted now, anywhere on that side of the airport for good shots of arrivals on 33?
