Just off Junction 10 of the M1, Luton is the UK's premier airport for Executive/private Jets, as well as being one of the UK's main passenger airports. Low cost carriers EasyJet and WizzAir operate most frequently to and from the airport. Luton also has a number of charter flights mainly operated by Thomson Airways. Other airlines which frequently use the airport are Aer Arann, Monarch Airlines and Ryanair. Luton is unfortunately not a fantastic airport to view at due to it's location. At the western end of the airport there are many major roads and a high cliff which prevents you spotting all along that side of the airport.

The wide Window has 8 seats over looking Runway 26/08, the seating area is next to Priority Lane/Boarding at Check In decks, as you enter the terminal through the turning doors, continue past the bureau de change after "Special Assistance" turn right and the area is on the Right. Airport Security are kind and helpful they come over and are interested in learning about a spotters enthusiasm. Photo Spot Spot B - Emergency Exit Gate

This spot is located just south of the runway, where aircraft will depart and arrive infront of you. This spot is good for both runway 08 and 26, however runway 26 operations are much better. Thankfully runway 26 is used the most (about 75% of the time).

The terrain in this area is a little uneven meaning aircraft can barely be seen when near the runway 08 threshold. Unfortunately the perimetre fence here is in the way and is very unusual meaning photo shots can be difficult however you can still get some good views/photoes of aircraft taxiing, departing and arriving.

The airport staff do not seem to have any problems with you being here. Car parking is free of charge and is not restricted. Luton doesn't have alot of spots so for both runway directions, this is certainly the best spot Luton has to offer!

Photo Spot Spot C - Runway 26 Threshold

This spot is one which is not really worth bothering to visit. The aircraft when landing on runway 26 will arrive over you at quite a low altitude. Departures from runway 08 are alot higher up when they pass over the spot so this area is not at all good to visit when runway 08 is in use (which is only about 25% of the time). This whole airport is doom and gloom for viewing at when runway 08 is in use, so try to avoid visiting the airport when runway 08 is the active.

At this location the terrain is very uneven and there is a big hill between the spot an the runway. There is also a large fence which you can barely see through and due to the airports elevation, the ILS poles stand very high up obscuring the view even further. This means you cannot see any ground movement (inc. departures) what so ever or any runway 26 arrivals touchdown. Approach shots can be had from here only before they pass over you and no other shots can possibly be had from this area.

The airport staff do not seem to have any problems with you being there. Car parking is free of charge but it's very restricted as no more than two cars can park at the spot. Despite this area being a poor area to view planes, it's one of only two areas Luton has to offer and you aren't really going to be bothered there.

I have found that the best place for spotting is in the long stay car-park by the Harrods Hangar, been there a few times after walking around the fences and collecting all the bizjets on deck, you can walk round by the gulf stream hangar and get whats inside there too, happy spotting.

Hi George, caught a steam stopper from Cricklewood to Luton, then bus to Airport, walked around hangers, saw D C 3s and D C 4s couple of Connies on apron, that was spotting in the 50s, still at it now, behind fences though!

Go up Eaton green road as far as the big roundabout by the large office building, turn right and and carry on this road, it will take you out into the countryside, stay on this road til you come to Darley Rd on your right. Turn down here, its a narrow lane that takes you past the end of the runway. stay on this lane all the way to the T junction, then turn right. about 500 yrds along this road there is a sharp left han bend with a lane going off to the right. Take this lane and it will take you to the viewing spot I think they mean. Its a great spot for photo's TIP, take some step ladders with you.....

Good luck

I often come to Luton with my husband on a Sunday to spot aircraft. We normally park at Spot B. I enjoy taking different photo's and my husband normally does the filming.
We spend hours watching the aircrafts land and takeoff.
It's a really relaxing spot.
