Guide to San Diego North Island NAS Airport

North Island NAS is just huge, however for its size there are relatively few movements. The only place you are likely to get anything close to air traffic is from the beech near Sunset Park on Coronado Island. Okay so it's not busy but the location is perfect. The beach is fantastic and if you're equipped with something to sit on, eat, drink and avoid sand & camera mixing you can make the most of a dull day spotting. when something does fly over head you can be certain of something unusual: C-2, E-2, C-20, H-60, V22, P-2, C-17, F-18 as well as some civilian contractors biz a/c. The approach lighting runs in to public beach area so you know where you are in relation to Rwy 29. You want to be on the sea side of the approach lighting so the sun will be at your back. Roll up your trousers and put a handkerchief on your head and you'll blend right in to the San Diego beach scene.
