| Inside the flight deck of the remarkable Super Guppy. Similar layout to the Stratocruiser or KC-97's of old, although slightly updated. Originally N211AS, this SGT was converted from the hull of an old USAF Stratotanker in 1970. The 'balloon' superstructure scratch built to ship outsize loads such as Saturn V rocket, Titan missile stages and subsequently sold to Aero Maritime/Airbus for the transportation of A300 & A310 wing sections etc until retired in 1996, now among the marvelous collection of aircraft at Bruntingthorpe. Note the control columns tied together with a piece of rope to stop the flying surfaces from blowing around. Earlier Guppy's retained the C-97 piston props and the later Super Guppy Turbines were fitted with Allison turboprops, similar to what you would find on old C-130's. Incidentally, the nose gear came from the Boeing 707. Another amazing aircraft. | ||
