From the Flight archives, a report on the order by Air Europe of Rolls Royce powered MD11 aircraft. the engine, initially called the RB211-524L, eventually became more commonly known as the Trent.
Stunning looking plane in AE stripes. Just a shame the Rolls version of the MD11 never happened and Air Europe was just a memory by the time the MD11 took off.
Douglas and Aerospatiale had links going back to the Caravelles that Douglas were going to manufacture under licence, but instead built their own DC-9.
Great pity they went to the wall.
The MD suffered from crap performance, got slagged off by SIA and AA and the whole pack of cards came down. MD fixed the aerodynamic problem but it was too late and the industry had found the B767 & 777. i would suggest that as a frieghter they will be around for a long time to come cos you only need to look at the L-1011F to see what happens to a bad idea and most of the MD-11 are still flying
