On Wednesday 9th September 2009, Emirates will operate (for 1 day only) the Airbus A380 on the lunchtime service (EK039/040) for the airport's 70th birthday party and official opening of its new International Pier!

Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline, says: "Emirates and Birmingham International Airport have enjoyed a successful partnership since we started services in 2000, and it's fitting that we should mark this significant milestone in the airport's history by flying in our most talked about aircraft. We hope that many travellers from around the region will take advantage of this opportunity to fly on the superjumbo for the first time. With the range of amenities we have on board, including the world's first Onboard Shower Spas in First Class, we are sure they won't be disappointed."

Joe Kelly, Birmingham International Airport's Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: "Our 70th anniversary is a fantastic milestone for the airport and we are delighted that Emirates is helping us celebrate our birthday with the A380. Additionally, this is the first commercial flight of an A380 outside of London Heathrow in the UK". As well as celebrating our 70th anniversary, Wednesday 9th September 2009 is also the official opening date of our new £45 million International Pier. The Pier replaces the existing Pier, constructed in 1984, with state of the art facilities and it is therefore very fitting that the Emirates Airbus A380 will be one of the first aircraft to use it."

A380 schedule: (Wed 9th September 2009)
EK039/040 Arr 12:35 - Dep 14:15 - A380-800.

Very excited for you all, I'd come down if I wasn't working.

Sadly this line:

"this is the first commercial flight of an A380 outside of London Heathrow in the UK"

confirms it won't be coming to Manchester on the 7th September as rumoured. Not surprised though since MAN's A380 stand isn't ready and won't be till January 2010 at the earliest.

This would be interesting to see.

Landing won't be a problem but is BHX's runway long enough for "The Worlds Largest Aircraft" to get airborne?

I cannot see this A/C getting airborne from BHX with Pax, Cargo and almost full fuel load.

Just hope the simulator training pays off.

Won't be flying with anything near full fuel load

Nice pics Tony. Seeing as I decided not to take the day off work today and go to Birmingham I would like to say that you are all welcome for the lovely weather, because if I had gone down it would have rained heavily.

PH Sid,

I can totally understand where you are coming from. I am jinxed in that too.

I live near Wolverhampton but on my days off, I go to Manchester Airport and guess what? It rains lol

So, thinking along the lines of yourself. I won't go to BHX to spoil it for the others lol.

Guess with have you to thank then sid! lol

Well, there she goes.

I am tracking on AirNav and I thought they would have to use RWY 15 for take-off due to low surrounding area.

I'm still impressed it got off the ground.

.... Over to Tony for the final report : )

Sorry can't give you the final report because i never stayed all day, but i did see it take off from my bedroom window seemed a pretty steep takeoff
Quote | Reply | Top of Page
Yes, I bet it was a steep take-off.

Imagine driving along the A45 (Coventry Road) and seeing this coming towards you as it was at V2.

Would you slow-down and watch or put your foot down and get the hell out of its way lol : )

Well, probably like many in this forum who just watched BBC Midlands Today.

We saw a glimpse of the A380 but the report was geared towards the "Environment".

Well, it's thanks to people like Tony and LuckyLee who brought us the stills and Lee's video footage.

Yes Lee, yours was far better than the BBC's.

Knowing that the Emirates A380 was making a very special visit to Birmingham on 9 September 2009, I wanted to make sure that I captured the aircraft the best way I could so that I could share the experience with those who unfortunate enough not to see her, or for those who wanted to see her from a different angle or even to experience the event again and again.

I hope you'll enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed filming it. It really was a treat and I have managed to film her completely differently than ever before.

Enjoy

PS. I would love to hear from you, so if you have a YouTube account please rate and comment.

Much appreciated

I so, hope that you are right Steve! Keep us posted!!

As for the 380 itself.... it's a 'grower' for me in general. However, in saying that, those wings are truely, truely stunning! Beyond belief. The flight deck isn't too shabby either! AWESOME!

Great work on the vid mcpc! Nice stills Lee. You are indeed 'lucky' my friend.

Just want to see 1 at MAN!!!happy

Thanks for sharing happy
