If it's a -328 that makes it GE engined as it's Air France specification (although not taken up by them)

15 years old. If it's going on the Florida run I'd expect it to operate off the Manchester base and do other bases, but Leeds with a full load might be a bit of a stretch. It could do shorter, high volume routes from LBA though.

BTW G-LSAD is in for paint at MAN soon, the white one.

It's supposed to be based at MAN.

I'd imagine they'll be getting winglets on it which will look nice

It will be a Manchester based aircraft...will be doing Florida, Mexico and i cant remember were else.....it will be a busy little bee for J2

Jet2holidays flights I expect, they are selling a fair chink of cabin capacity through that now. There might be stuff that a second one can do out of LBA though as they can pack a 757 on the beach routes, and it's such a good plane in high density fit. Lower fuel loads to places like Spain or wherever should make that runway feasible.

742?

You trying to put them out of business happy

There is a reason why those planes are in the desert.

There is also a reason why newer 742s of BA with Rolls Royce engines have been cut up or stored.

737s and 757s are still a good economic proposition because their engines are fairly efficient. Old 747s are hopelessly inefficient. That's why there are so many getting the chop.

It's not as simple as grabbing a plane from the desert (even if it is 'cheap') and throwing it on a route.

Crews can be type rated on the 757/767 and engineers can be qualified on both of those aircraft so it make sense. If they got a 747 they'd need a whole new set of pilots, cabin crew, engineers and spare parts for the aircraft which would cost too much. The fuel burn on classic 747s is hideously inefficient so with Jet2s pricing structure I doubt they'd be making much, if any, profit.

Just look what happened to chav city direct / XL happy

The 767 would be ideal for Jet2. Chav City direct had a 747 on its florida runs and where are they now. . With the 767 it could work from various bases and if MAN flights are a success why not other bases. It would open up possiblities for them with minimum expense. For operators like Jet2 the key word is expense.
The likes of 747's and 777's work better on airlines which offer premium products suich as business class where they can make more money and make them aircraft earn there money. Its a big difference between a £350 economy fare compared to a £1500 business class fare for example.

I tjhink Chav City was one of the few bits of the XL group that made money! That's why Virgin Holidays bought the brand out of receivership. They used it to pad their own operations out though. I don't think there were any major assets that came with it.

Those 747s though were utter dogs. Corsair are the only all-Y firm to make money using the 747, as they pack it to the effing rafters and then add even more seats until the thing is bulging. However even they have moved on to newer 747-400s they got cheap when United went into rehab.

If I'm not mistaken the XL 743s were old Corsair ones too.

Jet2 76W, that's gonna be one sweet looking bird. So have they officially announced SFB/CUN from MAN this summer? I take it they're going to be charters via Jet2Holidays or are we looking at scheduled service (would be nice)?

For the record I flew TravelCityDirect (as they prefered to be known!) on their 747-200 (TF-ABA), was a great flight, on time, lovely crew and my first trip on a jumbo. Unfortunately I think I was one of the lucky ones!

No. Not yet anyway, I think they need to do the ETOPS stuff again then market the service. It'll probably schlep around Sharm and places like that at first subbing for 757s before they start putting it out over water for the winter season. That would give them time to source another one too as well as train up their crews.

They have been advertising for 767 ticketed crews recently so it was a case of when and not if they took on the 767.
