PIA axe Glasgow route, but could expand other UK services
13.01.11

Glasgow will lose its direct air link with Pakistan this month following a shake-up by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) that could see it expand its other UK services, ABTN reports. The airline will axe its twice weekly Glasgow - Lahore route on January 22 following an appraisal of its loss-making operations in Europe.

Its decision to axe Glasgow is linked with competition from Emirates, which operates daily flights from Glasgow to Dubai with onward connections to Pakistan. A spokesman for the airline told ABTN that flights from Pakistan to Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds Bradford were profitable and could be expanded. PIA will also continue with its Manchester - New York route.

The spokesman said: ‘In the UK there are no other closures apart from Glasgow. Glasgow did not meet its operating costs, we tried to linger for a year, but it did not improve.’ He added that any expansion on UK routes would be in time for the summer timetable, which starts at the end of March.

Are PIA not stopping the LBA flights when the A310 gets retired? 777s cant get into LBA so when the A310 is retired they wont have the right size Aircraft to operate to LBA.

No plans as yet to retire them, PK are apparently doing a refurb on the A310 fleet

B777-200 can get in and out of Leeds with no problem, a PIA B777-200 is on the cards for coming into leeds , the groundwork etc has already been done, it is just a case of waiting for PIA to free up an aircraft.......

Why does it say "PIA will also continue with its Manchester - New York route", all the press releases so far have said JFK and ORD are going but they are keeping YYZ and launching IAH via IST.

Might have been a decision they weren't 100% with. After all, prestige means a lot to PIA and they would want to retain JFK for a number of reasons (including stuff like United Nations traffic).

I wouldn't be surprised if their government had insisted that a JFK service is retained on their own metal. PIA is a LOT like BG in that respect and there was recently a huge row over their maintenance division being managed by a political appointee and relative of someone high up in Islamabad.

Yeah, I suppose we were all saying about the uproar there would be if they cut MAN, well if they were seen to have 'abandoned' the entire Pakistani expat community in the States I don't think that would go down well at all...

Hope it stays, if nothing else, for prestige!
