Bad News. Air Southwest to cease operations.

It has just been announced by Eastern Airways that its to close its Plymouth/Newquay based operations operated by Air Southwest on September 30th 2011.

The airline currently operates daily flights from Leeds/Bradford to Bristol, Plymouth and Newquay. It has been confirmed that Eastern Airways will take over the Leeds/Bradford-Bristol service but flights to Newquay and Plymouth will be both lost. So that just leaves Flybe operating the only direct link to South West Devon/Cornwall area from LBA to Exeter on a daily basis.

Incident: Air Southwest DH8C near Dublin on Aug 8th 2011, cracked windshield

An Air Southwest de Havilland Dash 8-300, registration G-WOWB performing flight SZ-466 from Newquay,EN to Glasgow,SC (UK) with 24 passengers and 3 crew, was enroute over the Irish Sea near Dublin (Ireland) when the crew reported they had a seriously cracked windshield at the captain's side with burning evidence and arcing at windshield heating element. The cracking still continued to expand while on approach to Dublin's runway 28. The aircraft landed safely on Dublin's runway 28 at 18:20L (17:20Z) and vacated the runway.

The passengers were rebooked onto another flight and reached Glasgow with a delay of 4 hours.

Would be nice to see the Dash 8-300's in eastern colours.

What is the possible future of the eastern airways fleet?

Air-England

Absolutely no chance of the Dash in my opinion

Concorde Lover

Will WOWB be returned to service with them or is there no point.

If true that would be ashame.

Which a/c is more fuel efficient and has the lower CASM, the Dash 8 300 or the Saab 2000?

Not sure, but I really doubt T3 will take on the dash 8 300, it would be such a small sub fleet it would do more bad than good.

I can confirm that Air Southwest/Eastern Airways, Dash 8-300, G-WOWB that suffered damage at Dublin the other day has now been repaired and is flying again out of its Newquay base.

It is also confirmed that Eastern Airways will be keep the 3 current flying Air Southwest Dash 8's in service which includes, G-WOWA, G-WOWB and G-WOWE as these aircraft are owned by the company out right, where as G-WOWC and G-WOWD have been withdrawn for service and sold due to them been on expensive leases.

Currently and until then September 30th Air Southwest have 2x Dash 8's based at Newquay Airport while the 3rd aircraft is based up at Aberdeen.
From October 1st Eastern will base 2x Dash 8's at Aberdeen while the 3rd will be based at Bristol. Crews are been kept on by Eastern Airways. Some Air Southwest mangerment have been offered relocation packages to Eastern's Humberside HQ from Plymouth. But not many have taken up the option. Instead they are leaving the company altogether.

Hope that helps.

Wow, thats a surprise lbaspotter, will they be repainted? I thought they would be useless because even though they have the small ERJ subfleet they fill in the gap between the JS41 and the S2000. Could they use the Dash's for EU expansion.

Eastern Airways are to drop the 2x daily, BAe Jestream 41 Teeside-Leeds-Southampton service at the end of this month by looks off things. As no flights are bookable on that route on there website after the end of August 2011.

So looks like flybe have at long last beaten them after a long had battle. Flybe currently operate 3x daily direct services to Southampton from both nearby Leeds/Bradford and Newcastle airports using there larger Dash 8-Q400's

Really sad for DTV, I cant see the airport lasting.
Quote | Reply | Top of Page
DTV has had less than 200'000 passangers over the last 12 months......they surely cant continue to operate with such massive losses.....its weird how peel's other two airports are doing okay.....
Quote | Reply | Top of Page
Because DTV has absolutely sh*t management who want to learn how to run an airport i.e that pushing away airlines is not good for the airport

Just been confirmed that Eastern Airways are going to increase both there Leeds/Bradford to Aberdeen and Bristol service's from 2x daily to 3x daily from October 3rd using the ex Air Southwest Dash 8's.

Last night saw the last ever Air Southwest service been operated. As off mid-night there AOC was withdrawn and all flights to Newquay stopped.

The airlines 3x Dash 8-300's, G-WOWA, B & E have been fully transferred onto the Eastern Airways register and will continue to operate the airlines 3x daily Aberdeen - Leeds/Bradford - Bristol service.

Ex Air Southwest Dash 8-300, G-WOWA has been repainted and now wares full Eastern Airways Colors. She entered back into service this morning on the first south bound Aberdeen-Leeds-Bristol service.

G-WOWB & G-WOWE are set to follow her into the paint shop for a re-spray into Eastern Colors.
