I am on holiday with my 10 year old around London in August and will have a few hours to spare between 7pm and 9pm in the Heathrow area.
I was wondering if there was still a viewing area that was open to the public where we could watch planes.
If not, where could we go? Easy parking would be good as he cannot walk far!

No official viewing area anymore. Your best bet would be Myrtle Avenue if they are landing on 27L in the afternoon on the dates you visit. Check out the Heathrow guide as it contains a huge amount of info and pretty much all you'll need to know:

The rooftop viewing dosent exist now, it got demolished and now a skeleton frame of the new T2 is being built there. It got closed soon after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, with Gatwicks Skyview surviving until early 2004 due to building work obscurring the views there.
