Heya, Im new to aviation photography and keen to get some practice in getting shots of aircraft. My camera is fairly good, but I dont want to buy an SLR just yet until im a bit more experienced. Im located in Worcester and regularly commute from here to Northampton. Anyone got any idea's on where I can start??? I just need something fairly easy to get used to it all, my main interest is civil aircraft however I do understand that my camera may not be quick enough to get shots of these aircraft while they're on the move.
Any advice will be most appreciated.

Thanks, Alana happy

Assuming that you travel via the M5, M42, M6 and M1, you could do a lot worse than drop into Birmingham Airport. There a couple of good photo spots (one at either end of the runway) where you can get good pics of aircraft taking off and/or landing (depending on which runway is in use).

I usually park at the far end of Long Stay Car Park No. 1 as close to the runway threshold as possible. From here, you can also get decent shots of aircraft taxiing to and from the Terminal buildings. It costs £3.50 an hour - which is a lot less than you pay elsewhere. Just one note of caution - the position of the sun means that any photos will be backlit after about 3.00 p.m. (which means they'll be rejected by the screeners on this and other aviation websites).

For more info., take a look at the Birmingham Airport Guide (by clicking on the 'Airport Guide' link above).

Ok thankyou, I dont travel by car unfortunately but by train. However I do go past BHX and have often thought about trying there but was just unsure of where to start, or best location at the airport etc

The far end of Long Stay Car Park No. 1 is a 10-15 minute walk from the main Terminal. Alternatively, if you get off the train at Marston Green station, it's a relatively short walk to Sheldon Country Park, which is situated at the opposite end of the runway.

Agreed, but not terribly convenient if you're travelling between Worcester and Northampton!
