Hello, I was hoping you could help me. I'm looking to take some photographs of planes taking off over houses. I remember seeing an iconic photograph, which I can't now find, of a plane taking off over houses in the foreground. If memory serves it was either Gatwick or Heathrow. I really hope you can help me. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you in advance. Regards, Lee Sanders

Hi Sanders, the most famous spot for this type of photo is Myrtle Avenue which is very close to Hatton Cross tube station at Heathrow. This is where the BA B777 scraped over the perimeter road before crash landing.

There is a grass area where photographers and spotters gather and a BP petrol station just around the corner where they have a small cafe and toilets. It's a great spot and from some angles the aircraft do seem to be just above the rooftops.

Here is a link to the Plane-mad spotting guide.

BTW...do the planes from Heathrow always take off in this direction i.e over the houses or do they come in to land this way too? I want to capture images of them taking off over the houses. How can I make sure I go on the right day/time?

It depends on the wind direction on any given day, just check that in the Airport Weather section of this site, or Heathrows website. To catch craft leaving out over Myrtle Ave you'll need 09R departures - however 27ops are more commanly used at LHR.
