Hi just won a Canon EF 75-300mm Mk III 1:4-5.6 lens from Ebay-would anyone like to show me any pics they have taken with this lens and their opinion of it.
Thanks

I assume it's the cheaper version that doesn't have built-in image stabilisation. I've got the slightly smaller EF 55-200mm 1:4.5-5.6 USM (also won on eBay), which I am very pleased with, apart from the fact that it can be prone to camera shake, especially in low light conditions at slow shutter speeds.

Yes it is and it is the non USM one which seems to be quite popular.I have a Tamron 55-200 f4-5.6 Macro lens already and I find it excellent to use and it's not the least bit heavy although at full zoom images are fuzzy and are not sharp sadly.

sorry but dont expect to get great quality pics from that lens, the 55-250 would have been a better option on a low budget.

I have the 75-300 and the 55-250 with is and I much prefer it. The larger lens came with the camera which I bought second hand. I find the 300 doesn't perform too well at full zoom. Usually a lot of noise of the pics. It's very rare I use it now.

Thanks for your advice Tango!! Yeah I've heard the 55-250 is much better but didn't find any at the same price of the 75-300 sadly.

People keep saying the 75-300 is a terrible lens but I've decided to try it out for a bit and will keep it though.People say to get good results at 300mm,you have to stop the lens down to f11 with many picutres from this lens getting into Airliners.net which is great! I'll tell you how I am getting on when I receive it between the 27th and the 30th.

I have the 75-300mm III USM and it's a great starter lens for the price. Towards the 300mm mark quality fades a little but that's to be expected with a £150ish lens.

Think 'terrible' would be going too far, I used to have the first generation Nikon 70-300 f4-5.6ED & yes at the long end it was purple-fringetastic and blurry but the results were decent enough, I would imagine your lens is way better than mine used to be so enjoy it.
Thing is with taking aircraft shots everything is against you, you need fast speeds to stop action, small apertures for the depth of field and low ISO to keep the noise down.
My current lens has VR but tend to turn it off to make the batteries last longer and these stabilisation systems (certainly from what I read) are useless at speeds above 1/500 second.
Anyway as I say good luck with it.
Edit: really good shots Sam.

Following on from the others, I wouldnt say the 75-300 is terrible, I've had some good shots out of it (well I think so anyway, see link)
I think I'm just a touch more consistent with the 55-250. Although I dont use the other lens much, I've no plans to get rid just yet. Just go with it and enjoy it. Hope we can see some of your results.

Thanks everyone!! Most of my new pics will be taken on the 75-300 III as of next week and will be on the internet for you to enjoy!! I'll try and make the most out of it until I get a 70-200 L series f4 lens at the end of the year. Results from the USM version look good Sam well done mate although the 75-300 III (non USM) still retains the same image quality which is excellent!! I got mine for a bargain-just above £50 so am very pleased and should arrive by the end of the week.I will try and stop the lens down at 300 as most people say so that's not a problem.

Hi everyone, just received my Canon EF 75-300 III lens which turned out to be a USM which was very pleasing for me as that is the best budget version!! I will be going to Heathrow tomorrow to see the 787 and will be taking this lens on it's first spotting trip putting it through it's paces although I have taken some test shots and after playing around with the settings,I was impressed with the results.

Have a good time acquainting yourself with the 787. Having seen her performing a flypast at Luton earlier in the week, she's an impressive piece of kit and very photogenic. Make certain to upload your pics!

Thanks Baltimore!! Sadly I won't be going to Heathrow to see her because I am now a bit busy but will get it on the weekend at BA Engineering and it's 1005 takeoff on Tuesday to Oslo instead.Am dying to hear her whispering engines and it's futuristic design soon!!

300mm Prime is probably your best lens to get, combine it with a 70-200mm with a 1.4x extender, it gives amazing pictures of the EOS 1D mk IV I use at work.

Just purely out of interest, why would you combine a 300mm prime along with a 70-200 1.4 as they more or less overlap.
Thanks.
