Guide to Arrecife Lanzarote Airport (ACE / GCRR)

Lanzarote is a good airport for aviation photography and spotting and with great beaches, bars, restaurants and hotels all within a 15 minute walk of the airport, it is the perfect place for a nice break. The resort of Matagorda is the closest to the airport, this leading round to the biggest resort of Puerto del Carmen which is in easy reach with a bike or car. There are many hotels and apartments within easy walking distance, the Hotel Beatriz Playa (see below) offers the best views, but there is also the Sol Lanzarote and a number of apartment blocks situated within a short walk of the best spots at the airport.
Lanzarote is quite a busy holiday airport, not quite reaching the likes of Palma or Malaga but it entertains all of Europes leading charter carriers and an increasing number of scheduled services, GB Airways having recently started a BA franchise service from Gatwick. Most of the aircraft are grouped into days, some very quiet, some very busy. The list below is what I found during my visit:
Monday - Quiet but quite interesting. A few of the British charters mainly MyTravel and Air 2000 but the main operators today being Scandinavian. A nice mix of Maersk Air, MyTravel (ex Preniair) including an A330 flight and two Novair 737-800's.
Tuesday - German Day. Mix of LTU, Air Berlin, Thomas Cook (Condor) and Hapag Lloyd.
Wednesday - Very Quiet, the odd Britannia flight but thats about it!
Thursday - British Day and the busiest day overall. About 80% (if not more) of UK flights operate on Thursday. Also the odd Transavia and Dutchbird.
Friday - Another quiet Scandinavian day mainly Maersk Air and Britannia (AB).
Saturday - German Day. Dominated by Aero Lloyd and Thomas Cook.
Sunday - Another German Day but this time mainly Hapag Lloyd and Air Berlin. LTU also operate an A330.
There are also very regular visits from the Spanish charters, some of these aircraft being based at the airport. Regular visits from Futura, Air Europa, Spanair and Iberworld. The only Iberia flight I saw was the daily 757 from Madrid arriving between 1300 and 1400, the same aircraft many days. Also look out for Cygnus Air DC-8's and the AeBal 717. The most common visitors are the Binter Canarias ATR-72's, you should see the whole fleet within a week.
There are a number of good photo spots at Arrecife, the airport runs along a public beach which offers some great views and good photographic opportunities.

Spot A (1) - Top of the Hill - Matagorda Side
Charges: None
A good afternoon spot for photographs, facing the sun in the morning, this area overlooks the taxiway and runway with a backdrop showing the sea and Arrecife city.
PhotosSpot B (2) - Beach alongside the runway
Charges: None
The beach runs round the end of runway 03 and up towards Arrecife centre following the runway for quite a distance. The is a new fence seperating you from the runway which is a bit of a pain to avoid. Line up shots are possible, but action shots are very difficult because of the fence.
Good for shots in the morning.
Spot C (3) - Hotel Beatriz Playa - Balcony
Charges: Hotel Charges
During my visit I stayed at the Hotel Beatriz Playa in Matagorda. This is perhaps the best place to stay for viewing aircraft on the whole island. The Hotel is brilliantly situated with certain rooms offering not just great views but also a good place for photography with approach shots very easy from the comfort of your balcony!
