Guide to Nottingham East Midlands Airport (EMA / EGNX)
|
|
East Midlands is a small regional airport in the center of the country just off the M1 motorway. Passenger services at the airport are confined really to the usual mix of charters and low cost airlines you expect at most regionals. bmibaby, easyjet and Ryanair all have a good route network, with Ryanair the most likely it seems to add the majority of future routes.
The airport does though have a good selection of cargo flights since the extension of the single runway to a length approaching 10,000ft. DHL have a large hub at the airport and there are regular flights from international freight airlines like UPS, Lufthansa Cargo and Kalitta.
An-124 are also chartered to operate flights from the airport on a regular basis.
Since the runway extension the airport has seen a number of aircraft on training circuits, the quiet periods and long runway make it the perfect place for UK airlines to train their new pilots. Virgin are one exmple, their A340's use the airport, the first A340-600 (G-VSHY) was here just a week after delivery (see pics in photo gallery). Training flights are banned on Sundays though.
Good photos are difficult to obtain at EMA, most spots face the sun for most of the day and the only other option is approach shots.

Spot A (1) - Overhead view, near A453
Charges: None
There is an area next to a small lane just off the A453 (use the map to view directions to get there). This spot is at the east end of the runway, therefore aircraft arriving on runway 27 or departing from runway 09 will pass over this area. This location is much better to view arrivals to runway 27, which is used the most often (about 75% of the time).
You can get some excellent shots of aircraft arriving on runway 27 and some fairly good ones of runway 09 departures. Unfortunately barely any ground shots can be had from here as the perimetre fence is in the way and some aircraft do not taxi beyond taxiway W. Despite this, aircraft can still be seen at the stands, on some of the taxiways, on the runway, touching down and taking off. This location is close to the A453 and M1 motorway meaning video footage can be disturbed by road/motorway noise.
This area has plenty of car parking, is not restriced and has no car parking charges. You can stay here as long as you like as airport staff don't have any problems with you being there, so you're extremely unlikely to be told to move away.
PhotosSpot B (2) - Aeropark
Charges: 50p Adults, Kids Fre
The aeropark offers views over the 09 end of the runway, which is the least used end. When 27 is use this is pretty pointless, when 09 is used it faces the sun for most of the day but may be good early in the morning or later towards the evening.
Not bad for viewing if 09 is in use, but pretty useless for photography.
Opening times are very limited:
(April - October)
Thursdays 1030 - 1700
Saturdays 1200 - 1700
Sundays 1030 - 1700
Bank holidays except Christmas and Boxing day
Closed all other days
From November to March it is only open on Thursdays and Sundays!
PhotosSpot C (3) - Emergency Exit Gate
Charges: None
The exit gates area over looks the runway and is not too far away from taxiway Mike where most of the aircraft turn off after arriving on 27. This is probably the best spot at the airport although you are facing south making photography difficult at certain times of day. During the late afternoon the sun tends to edge towards the west and allow you to get better photos as your facing slightly east to take them.
There are a couple of gaps where the gate is along the fence which allow for you to get camera lenses through but if the area is busy then steps will be required.
It should also be noted that the walkway is good for photography with steps, but it can get very muddy and there are a lot of dog walkers that use it so its not just the mud that you could step in!
Spot D (4) - Overhead view, Castle Donnington Road
Charges: None
There is an area opposite the Hilton hotel on Long Border Road (use the map to view directions to get there). This spot is at the west end of the runway, therefore aircraft arriving on runway 09 or departing from runway 27 will pass over this area. This location is much better to view arrivals to runway 09, which is not used very often (about 25% of the time).
You can get some excellent shots of aircraft arriving on runway 09 but no reasonable shots of runway 27 departures. Unfortunately barely any ground shots can be had from here as the runway and taxi ways are quite far away and aircraft do not often taxi beyond taxiway H. Despite this, aircraft can still be seen at the stands, on some of the taxiways, on the runway, touching down and taking off. This location is close to a busy road meaning video footage is often disturbed by road noise.
There is enough space to park your car and there are no restrictions or charges. You can stay here as long as you like as airport staff don't have any problems with you being there, so you're extremely unlikely to be told to move away.
